Rockets fired on southern Israel from Gaza: Ashton condemns targeting of civilians ‘wherever they are’
01.11.2011, Israel and the World EU foreign policy chief expressed concern on the exchange of fire in the Gaza Strip and condemned the targeting of civilians "wherever they are.".
In a statement she said: "I am very concerned at the renewed exchange of fire in the Gaza Strip and the South of Israel following the firing of rockets by Islamic Jihad from Gaza into Israel. I wholeheartedly condemn the indiscriminate targeting of civilians where ever they are. I call on all sides to respect the cease-fire brokered by Egypt."
The Israeli army said in a statement that its aircraft last night fired at a squad that had shot a rocket at southern Israel. One Israeli was killed in " Palestinian rocket attack.
The army "will continue to operate with strength and determination against anyone who uses terror against the State of Israel," the statement said.
Following the flare-up between the Jihad Islamic and and Israel army forces, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday that Israel had no choice but to retaliate when faced with attack, and would stop "every attempt to fire against Israel and anyone who fires anyway".
