British Prime Minister David Cameron paid tribute to the "tremendous contribution" of the Jewish community to Britain and said his country will always "stand up for Israel against those who wish her arm."
In a message on the occasion of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, Cameron spoke of his Jewish roots by mentioning his great- great-grandfather, Emile Levita, a German-Jewish banker who came to Britain 150 years ago.
The Prime Minister said he was incredibly moved by Levita's story. "And it made me appreciate all the more what the Jewish community has brought to Britain," he wrote in his letter.
"As for the future I know that this New Year comes at a time of particular concern to many events around the world and about the welfare of Israel," he continued.
"You have a Prime Minister whose commitment and determination to work for peace in Israel is deep and strong. Britain will continue to push for peace, but will always stand up for Israel against those who wish her harm," he concluded.
