At the Levi Yitzchak Schneerson-Ohr Avner School of Dnepropetrovsk, the summer language camp for primary school students has gotten underway. The camp operates as part of the multi-faceted Kehila Project, which is jointly implemented by the Dnepropetrovsk Jewish community and the Jewish community of Greater Boston.
An event for the camp’s grand opening took place, at which time the teachers, counselors and head counselors of the camp were introduced to the children. The youngsters were divided into five groups according to age and level of proficiency in English.
Eight counselors came from Boston, led by Yehuda Chaikin. The Boston delegation included an expert on teaching English as a foreign language – Dr. Enli Shey – who has already begun to test each camper. Upon completing the camp, Dr. Shey will provide a report on student’s progress in their knowledge of English.
Staff members from Dnepropetrovsk who will jointly handle the work of the camp are: Olga Gorovaya, head teacher for elementary grades; Larissa Kurylenko, head teacher for morale-building educational work; and Alla Litvinenko, the head of the English department at the Jewish school. The camp involves the school’s leading English teachers, Alla Hlivetskaya, Natalia Zaitseva, and Tatyana Dzekunova.
The camp’s morning routine begins with breakfast followed by a Jewish lesson. After the Jewish lesson there are English language classes until lunch. After lunch, there are various activities led by the counselors from Boston, which take place in English. In the morning, while the children are studying English with their teachers, the counselors from Boston are studying the Russian language.
