European Jewish group calls on European leaders to press for democracy and freedom in Iran like they did in the Arab world
16.02.2011, Israel and the World The European Jewish Congress (EJC) called on European leaders to press unequivocally for democracy and freedom for the Iranian people and express concern about the situation in Iran.
According to EJC President Moshe Kantor, European leaders should issue similar responses that were released during the recent demonstrations in the Arab world.
"In the spirit of the ongoing fight for democracy in the region, it is vital that the European leaders do not suddenly fall silent when they are needed the most," he said.
"As Europeans we should fully support those who fight for freedoms that we take for granted."
Thousands of Iranians demonstrated Monday in Tehran to protest against the regime.
"The Iranians want a new a leadership, one that represents the true aspirations of the Iranian people and all those who seek a more tolerant and open world should unequivocally support that," Kantor said.
