German Chancellor Angela Merkel: a new government in Egypt must honor peace treaty with Israel
13.02.2011, Israel and the World German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that a new government in Egypt should seek Middle East peace and guarantee Israel's security.
"President Hosni Mubarak's resignation marked a historic change and a day of great joy. I wish the people a government free of corruption and censorship," she said.
But she added in a statement: "We expect from a future Egyptian government that peace in the Middle East will be sought, that treaties with Israel will be honored and that Israel's security will be guaranteed.”
Merkel appears to share the same concern with Israel and most other Western powers which worry that the Israel’s 1979 peace treaty with Egypt might not survive under a new Egyptian government, especially if Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood come to power.
In its latest statements, the Islamist group has repeatedly said that they will not respect the treaty once they are in power.
