Despite the fact that the streets of Chernigov were and still are covered with a foot of snow, the Jewish community and the hearts of Jews of Chernigov is experiencing a “warm spell,” most recently triggered by the recent fiery light of Chanukah.
From the first celebration, an evening gathering for Jewish women, to other events including a party for Jewish youth, public Menorah candle lighting ceremonies, a children’s concert, all the way through a Chassidic gathering on the fifth night of Chanukah, the holiday had an illuminating effect that has spurred the further development of the local Jewish community.
“Can we ever know all the inspiring and lasting results of these eight days, packed with excitement day after day?” asked Chief Rabbi of Chernigov Yisroel Silberstein. “Despite the extreme cold outside, both literally and spiritually, souls were being lit, one by one, in the Jewish community of Chernigov… and that warmth continues to spread.”
The Chassidic gathering on the fifth night of Chanukah was also a birthday party for Rabbi Silberstein. At the event, the synagogue was transformed into Café Jerusalem and participants enjoyed a wonderful meal and cultural program. However, the highlight of the event was the positive resolutions taken by the guests in lieu of a physical birthday gift to the rabbi. A raffle was held, whereby a gift (a Menorah) was given to someone who decided to do an extra mitzvah.
As an outcome of this series of Chanukah celebrations, about a dozen new members have come to the synagogue to join the local community and they are now involving their friends one by one. As well, an increased number of youth and students came out for Shabbat events, pledging to attend on a regular basis. As Chanukah ended and the menorahs began to be packed away, Jewish preschoolers, who had put on a Chanukah show for their families, were already planning and practicing for their next performance, which is scheduled for Tu Bishvat.
One example of how the light of Chanukah is still continuing to have a strong effect is seen in a local family. “This family came to visit and watch the youngsters’ concert, and they enjoyed themselves immensely,” explained Rabbi Silberstein. “Now little Darina is enrolled in preschool, and, G-d willing, her 18-month old brother is not far behind.. .”
These positive developments for the Jewish community of Chernigov, a member of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Ukraine, are proof that this warm and light-giving “snowball effect” is really gaining momentum!
