Syria warns Israel: Evading peace will bring Mideast war
26.11.2010, Israel and the World Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem criticized Friday the stalled peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians and said that closing the horizons to peace could lead to war in the Middle East.
In an interview with the Russian newspaper Moscow News, Moallem accused Israel for evading peace and said that the window of opportunity for a peace deal is slowly closing.
He said that the possibility of war "always exists in our region, as Israel usually outrageously evades the commitment to peace."
Moallem warned of the ramifications of a new Middle Eastern war emerging, saying that a new war "will not result in a winner and a loser."
"Everyone will lose because the existing advanced military technology can cause great damage, even for the side with huge military power," he said.
On Tuesday, Syria condemned an Israeli bill that sets tough requirements for any withdrawal from the Golan Heights or East Jerusalem, saying it was further proof that the Israeli government was not interested in peace.
A Syrian Foreign Ministry official said Tuesday the bill makes a mockery of international laws and UN Security Council resolutions.
Syria lost the Golan Heights to Israel in the 1967 Six-Day war and wants it all back as the price for peace.
