Mariupol Celebrates Lag B'Omer
05.05.2010, Community Life On Lag B'Omer, a parade of over 200 Jews including children, parents, teachers, students of the STARS youth program, and guests, streamed through the main streets of this east Ukrainian city. The crowd was led by Chief Rabbi of Mariupol Menachem Mendel Cohen, who is also a Chabad-Lubavitch emissary serving in the region.
Children carried colorful banners and posters encouraging observance of the commandments of the Torah. The festive procession arrived at the local House of Pioneers, where participants enjoyed a lively concert. Children from the Simcha Kindergarten recited the famous Twelve Pesukim Torah pasages.
At the House of Pioneers there was a concert by students of the Ohr Avner Chabad Evening School and a performance of young artists from the Argo Circus Collective, including gymnasts, tightrope walkers and jugglers. The children were able to try their luck at rope jumping and hula-hooping. One of the finishing touches of the evening was a raffle, with prizes ranging from games, dolls, videos, inflatable boats and more. The grand prize was a laptop computer.
The celebrations continued in a nearby city park, where rides were set up including a roller coaster and trampoline, as well as a shooting range.
The Jewish community of Mariupol is a member of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Ukraine.
