In Brest, Belarus, a commemorative ceremony took place at the monument to prisoners of the Jewish ghetto. The event, organized by the Jewish community of Brest, was well attended. In addition to local Jews, the gathering involved representatives of local authorities and public organizations, and leaders of various religious groups. Also participating in the ceremony were diplomats from all foreign consulates represented in Brest, including the consul general of the Republic of Poland Jaroslaw Ksiazek.
Representatives of the foreign consulates laid wreaths and flowers at the monument, while members of the Jewish community laid stones and lit candles in memory of the fallen. Chief Rabbi of Brest Chaim Rabinovich, who is also a Chabad-Lubavitch emissary serving in the region, said a prayer.
“This is not only for the benefit of the dead – this is also for those who are still alive, so that we remember the horrors of the Holocaust and so that the likes of this never happen again in the world,” stated Boris Bruk, chairman of the Jewish community, as he addressed the assembled.
