Following the riots in the capital of Kyrgyzstan, the Keren Yedidut Fellowship Foundation (otherwise known as the International Foundation of Christians and Jews) has decided to help needy Jews of Bishkek and other cities in Kyrgyzstan.
The decision to provide the assistance was made by Rabbi Yechiel Eckstein, founder and director of the IFCJ. The Fellowship Foundation plans to help 1,500 people with the purchase of food and medicine.
After the rioting and looting that took place this week in the national capital, many Jews’ food supply has been compromised. The situation is especially difficult for senior citizens who are afraid to leave their homes because of the continued looting in the republic. In addition, public authorities are not functioning effectively and the elderly are not certain if they will receive their pensions.
The task of distributing the aid was given to Chief Rabbi of Kyrgyzstan Arye Reichman, a Chabad Lubavitch emissary serving in the region. Rabbi Reichman will work together with the Fellowship Foundation as well as with several other Jewish institutions active in this republic.
