Synagogue Publishes Book on Laws of Mourning
26.01.2010, Religion The Great Choral Synagogue of S. Petersburg has published the book "Jewish Tradition: Burial, Mourning and Remembrance." It is a practical guide, offering readers a concise and straightforward description of the laws and customs relating to this subject. In addition, the necessary prayers are included in Hebrew, a Cyrillic alphabet transliteration, and the corresponding translation into Russian.
Unfortunately, in Russia, most people are not sufficiently familiar with the customs of their ancestors in relation to death and mourning. When it comes time to make plans following the passing of a love one, many are even surprised to learn that Jewish law actually prohibits cremation. For anyone interested in knowing what steps should be made and what laws do come into play, this new book will serve as a useful resource to learn these details.
The introductory part of the book includes an essay on the concept of funerals and mourning according to Jewish tradition. This publication has received the approval of Chief Rabbi of S. Petersburg Menachem Mendel Pewzner and includes a preface that he wrote. The book is available at the store located in the Great Choral Synagogue.
