IDF closes field hospital in Haiti

Last night, two weeks after the IDF rushed to Haiti with hundreds of doctors to help treat those wounded in the devastating earthquake, the field hospital which it had opened - and which came to symbolize the exceptional Israeli rescue effort - finally closed its doors.

As of Monday, 1,102 Haitians had been treated at the facility. Among that number, 13 women gave birth naturally, three babies were delivered using Caesarian sections, and 314 operations were performed.

Fifteen people remained hospitalized at the facility, and they will continue to receive treatment over the next few days until the pull-out of IDF forces is complete.

The closure is expected to continue until Thursday, when the last members of the medical team will fly back to Israel. Until that point, those doctors still at the facility will continue to admit special emergency cases.

Israel won international praise for the speed and efficiency in which it established the hospital. Just 16 hours after landing in the beleaguered country, the facility was up and running.
